
On May 15–16, 2025, the University of Latvia (Raiņa Bulvāris 19, Riga) will host the annual conference of the European Criminal Law Academic Network (ECLAN). This year’s theme: “The Presumption of Innocence: Contemporary Trends and Current Challenges.” The conference will bring together leading experts, academics, and practitioners to discuss one of the fundamental principles of criminal law.
The conference will address the following subjects:
- Historical origins, rationale, and recent developments surrounding the presumption of innocence
- The legal framework of the presumption of innocence within EU law
- Scope and limitations of the presumption of innocence
- Allocation of the burden of proof and standard of proof in the context of the presumption of innocence
- Challenges related to the presumption of innocence in the prosecution of legal persons
- Premature statements by public officials about the guilt of a defendant in the context of the presumption of innocence
- Confiscation of criminal assets in the light of the presumption of innocence
- Upholding the presumption of innocence in simplified forms of criminal procedure
