On March 31, 2025, the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia welcomed a delegation of faculty members and students from the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University. The Vilnius University delegation was led by the Dean, Assoc. Prof. Haroldas Šinkūnas, Vice-Dean Prof. Jurgita Paužaitė-Kulvinskienė, Assoc. Prof. Vigita Vėbraitė, and academic staff members specializing in civil law, legal theory and philosophy, constitutional law, and criminal law. The aim of the visit was to explore shared research interests and discuss opportunities for collaboration in projects and academic mobility initiatives.
During the meeting, two thematic working groups were formed based on the faculty members’ areas of expertise to promote in-depth dialogue and potential future cooperation.
This day also marked a significant step in academic collaboration between students — for the first time, within the framework of the 83rd International Scientific Conference of the University of Latvia, a student section was held in English. Six students from Vilnius University Faculty of Law and three students from the University of Latvia Faculty of Law presented their research. The student section opened with addresses from the deans of both faculties, who highlighted the successful collaboration between the institutions and wished the presenters the best of luck.
The student presentations addressed current topics in international law and human rights — from limitations on access to environmental data and human rights in climate policy, to the compatibility of state language requirements with human rights standards, the application of international humanitarian law to autonomous weapon systems, the classification of military activities in the Gaza Strip, and the impact of sanctions on Russia's position in space affairs.
During the visit, the Vilnius University representatives were given a tour of the premises and activities of the University of Latvia Faculty of Law. They also visited the University’s Academic Center, where they explored the learning environment and the opportunities it offers. The Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, Assoc. Prof. Edvīns Danovskis, stated:
“We are pleased with the successful collaboration between our faculties and our shared vision for future cooperation in research projects and the development of the study environment. Maintaining and nurturing strong international ties creates a favorable environment for the generation of research initiatives that are meaningful to society and opens up broad career prospects for both academic staff and students.”
We sincerely thank the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University for their responsiveness and cooperation, as well as the faculty members of the University of Latvia Faculty of Law for their dedicated work and hospitality!
