A team of four students from the University of Latvia Faculty of Law—Evija Velvele, Katrīna Rūmniece-Pakule, Kristīne Ilga Budkēviča, and Ņikita Paņins—traveled to Porto, Portugal, from February 10 to 12 to take part in the 13th Helga Pedersen International Moot Court Competition.

In this moot court competition, students represent their university by simulating proceedings of the European Court of Human Rights. This year’s case focused on the rights of a multiple sclerosis patient to cultivate and use marijuana for medical purposes. As a result, special attention was given to the right to health, individual autonomy, property rights, and criminal law aspects. Over the course of two days, the team presented arguments for both the applicant and the respondent.

The team considers this experience to be a valuable opportunity and is truly grateful to the University of Latvia Faculty of Law for enabling them to participate in the competition and proudly represent their university!

A special thank you goes to their coaches, Kristiāna Pētersone and Maira Marija Pužule, who supported the team throughout months of preparation.

Results regarding potential qualification for the final rounds in Strasbourg, France, will be announced in March.
