The Latvian Academy of Sciences has announced the most significant scientific achievements in Latvia for 2024, including the book General Principles of Law: Natural Rights, Legal Methods, and System Principles by Professor Dr.iur. Daiga Rezevska of the University of Latvia Faculty of Law, published by the prestigious Brill | Nijhoff.
Dr. Rezevska’s research offers a new perspective on general principles of law as a source of law and directly applicable norms. Her approach, based on the ideas of Hans Kelsen, Herbert Hart, and Ronald Dworkin, bridges legal theory with a democratic legal system founded on the principles of the rule of law and human dignity. The study develops a theory of general legal principles, which played a crucial role in Latvia’s transition from a totalitarian legal system to democracy and its integration into the European Union.
The book makes a significant contribution to legal theory by providing tools for ensuring justice and strengthening public trust in the legal system. The legal theory developed by Professor Rezevska is now available to an international audience, aiding in the understanding of Latvia’s legal system and its values.
